Hardship and Asylum Evaluations

Dr. Mark Ackerman specializes in providing immigration hardship psychological evaluations and domestic violence evaluations through his Atlanta, GA office.

Hardship evaluations are reports designed to assist you and your attorney with the assessment of psychological and medical factors of relevance to deportation decisions. I am committed to assuring that the immigrant community is treated fairly in their goal of obtaining U.S. citizenship. In my work with you and your family I will address hardship issues through a thorough evaluation, which includes review of your history, medical documents, interview and psychological testing with yourself and frequently other family members, often U.S. born citizen children, wherein I examine emotional, cognitive and behavioral issues of relevance to your application for U.S. citizenship. Various mental health factors including depression, anxiety, panic disorder, domestic violence (VAWA = Violence Against Women Act) and post-traumatic stress experiences are all conditions that can be objectively evaluated through my examination, the results of which are described within my written report and/or by my testimony. I have learned over the years of doing this work that many families are unaware that they are experiencing exceptional and unusual hardship, but through these evaluations, such difficulties are uncovered. In some cases, pending deportations can be cancelled (e.g."cancellation of removal") by showing that it would be an extreme hardship on a U.S. citizen child or spouse, if a foreign born parent or spouse were to be deported. You may also qualify for cancellation of removal if you are a victim of a crime and meet the criteria for U-Visa status.The accurate assessment and communication of these conditions can play a critical role in cancellation of removal as well as approval for political asylum.   I have a great deal of experience in conducting these evaluations and communicating the results. I have extensive experience testifying in immigration court. Each assessment which I perform is objective with no particular result in mind, and professional judgments based on the data are what is used to complete the written report. Click here to learn more about: Finding an Expert to Conduct the Immigration Hardship Psychological Evaluation.
